Description

John J. Bedoya Emerges at Sprouting Spaces

Community Program uses Art to Elevate Neighborhoods and Stimulate Business in Stamford

STAMFORD, CT - As part of the contemporary art movement and community development they have generated in the city, the Fernando Luis Alvarez Gallery proudly announces John J. Bedoya's new Sprouting Spaces studio opening on May 9th from 6-9pm at 485 Summer Street, Stamford, CT 06901. On display will be a 36-by-9 foot triptych, currently being created in the studio, alongside previous works.

When Bedoya arrived in Stamford from his home in Colombia, the snowy landscape was new to him, but as the New England soil thawed, he watched fragments of earth emerge from the subsoil like a puzzle. These fragments grew into gardens, parks, and forests, scenes familiar to Bedoya, and becoming his landscape. The densely rich and masterful works he was moved to create at Sprouting Spaces combine acrylic, sand, mulch and natural fiber. They are narratives of the earth and his relationship to it.

Inspired by the quote: "Eternal passers of ourselves, there is no landscape but what we are..." by Fernando Pessoa, Bedoya notes, "Places may change by their geography, but what is under the ground is known for me. Under snow or under fire, what's left below are the remains of nature-the skeletons of trees, detritus of fallen leaves, the dry roots, ash and waste. Finally the landscape is the same."
