Jena Thomas solo show Acid Summer at 701 Center for the Contemporary Arts in Columbia, S.C.
July 23, 2021

From Alvarez Gallery, we would like to congratulate our represented artist Jena Thomas, who on July 15 of this year opened her solo exhibition “Acid Summer” at the 701 Center for Contemporary Art in Columbia. An exhibition in which Jena Thomas presents works in oil on canvas, on paper, and various collages that reference the everyday spaces we transit.

“Acid Summer” features a full room of works by Thomas and opened with a public dialogue between the artist and poet Whorty Evans, and will be on exhibit for the entire month of July 2021 through August 15, 2021. “Acid Summer” reflects the artist’s diverse explorations and research, and expresses her arduous work and interest towards contemporaneity and present contexts.

Jena Thomas is a young contemporary artist, currently represented by Alvarez Gallery, and has an impressive work and exhibition record. Her work consists of representing fictitious everyday landscapes, which differ from those in real life due to the obscure and mysterious atmospheres that the artist imbues into them. Thomas’s goal in these landscapes is to point out the alteration that humans produce in the environment and space. From there, we perceive the chromatic darkness in the twilight, and lightness in the stillness of these places, the obscurity and strangeness of their pools, buildings, and courtyards. The strangeness that we do not normally observe, due to the interruption of our movement, velocity, and day-to-day occupations.

The artist has dedicated much of her life to art: graduated in Fine Arts from the Massachusetts College of Art and Design in Boston and has a master’s degree from the University of Miami in Coral, Gables, FL, has received awards, scholarships, and the opportunity to show her work in several galleries. She received the 701 Center for Contemporary Art Award and was a finalist in the University of Miami’s Young Painters Competition. Jena Thomas has exhibited nationally with shows at the Boca Raton Museum of Art, Momentary Museum, Context New York, and Art Palm Beach. Her work has appeared in major publications such as Studio Visit magazine, New American Painting, and Creative Quarterly.
