Rex Prescott Walden’s artwork, included in the book “Miss Florence’s Artist Trees: Celebrating A Tradition Of Painted Palettes” by The Florence Griswold Museum

Miss Florence’s Artist Trees: Celebrating a Tradition of Painted Palettes, the 2019 book released by the Florence Griswold Museum, features the artwork of our artist: Rex Walden. 

David D.J. Rau, Director of Education and Outreach of the museum, recounts on this book the Miss Florence’s Artist Trees project as a celebration of the 200 painted palettes gathered by the Florence Griswold Museum to adorn Miss Florence’s Artist Trees. These painted palettes carry on the tradition of painting wooden panels started by the Lyme Art Colony artists, who were staying in Miss Florence’s house over a century ago. The palette artists’ styles and subject matter featured in the book are as varied as each individual artist. Oils, acrylics, watercolors, ceramics, glass, and collage are some of the techniques used to transform the palettes into traditional holiday scenes and landscapes. Artists from all over the country have donated works to this one-of-a-kind holiday icon. 

Located on a 12-acre site in the historic village of Old Lyme, the Florence Griswold Museum is known as the Home of American Impressionism, in addition to the restored Florence Griswold House, where the artists of the Lyme Art Colony lived.
